Surprise Visitor

Published March 20, 2015 by uncommonmommy

Spring crept in while I was sleeping,
She does this every year.
For weeks I dream of her arrival,
Then suddenly she’s here.

In the nodding heads of flowers,
On the pine sap scented breeze,
The voices of a thousand birds
Singing in the trees.

She’s the moodiest of seasons,
Always going to extremes,
But every time she visits,
I’m sad to see her leave.

Sleepless Night

Midnight porch sitting,
Rain so delicate
It clings to my eyelashes
On its silent descent,
Finding gratitude
In all the things
Beyond my control.

Impressions of February in North Carolina

Published February 3, 2015 by uncommonmommy

February in North Carolina
Buds on the red maples
Birdsong in the afternoon
Sun sets at 6pm
And children grow ansy
In anticipation of longer days.

Mud underfoot, and in pockets,
Sprouts and greens
Planting of seeds
Setting of goals
Setting of intentions
Nourishing life,

Thanking chickens
Misting seedlings
Kissing flowers
Foraging early wild greens
And mushrooms
Unpredictable weather.

A fresh cycle
Renewed  energy
Positive outlook
Excitement and Hope
Blessed Imbolc.

Beauty and Brilliance

Published January 8, 2014 by uncommonmommy

Today is going to be difficult. There will be parts that seem intolerable.
There will be irritation, annoyance,
and an ample amount of your requests being ignored.

Expect these things to occur.
Acknowledge that it happens.
Reconcile that it is normal.
Love yourself and your children despite these assurances.

Then you will find
That today is a good day
Filled with lots of little joys and oh so many hugs.
When you stop expecting beauty and brilliance, you’ll find you’re surrounded by it.
